Eco Sankofa is a Black-led urban farm and “living lab” dedicated to creating real-world solutions for both social and environmental challenges. The farm uses regenerative farming practices and community-driven education to build sustainable systems.

The Goal
Create a visual identity and online presence that reflects EcoSankofa’s commitment to sustainability while addressing disparities in food access, environmental justice, and education for communities of color, from Phoenix to Georgia and beyond.
As a living lab, EcoSankofa works alongside BIPOC communities to strengthen health, restore ecological balance, and expand educational opportunities. Through sustainable farming practices, the farm demonstrates how people can build self-sustaining solutions to today’s social and environmental challenges.
Our Strategy
Our work began with an exploration of Afrocentric history and ecological practices and goals. From this, we developed a cohesive plan that could represent the organization across all touchpoints.

The logo draws from the Sankofa symbol, framed with a circular, kente-inspired pattern and organic forms referencing teff, an ancient Ethiopian grain.

The color palette incorporates earth tones with accents inspired by African textiles, while supporting patterns use minimal motifs that honor ancestral history.

Applied across Eco Sankofa’s website and educational programs, including Farm Days, Garden Co-op, Reptile Rescue, Workshops, and Tours, ensuring a unified identity.

Research Afrocentric history, cultural symbols, and agricultural practices. This informed the selection of visual references that connect Eco Sankofa’s mission to both heritage and sustainability.
The Final Result
The Sankofa symbol was chosen as the primary mark, representing the idea of learning from the past to shape the future. Additional elements included kente-inspired patterns and organic forms on teff, an ancient Ethiopian grain, which introduced variation into the system. These components were applied across the logo, website, signage, and educational programs to establish a consistent visual identity.

Pet Sitting at Eco Sankofa
Eco Sankofa also runs Sankofa Sitting, a doggy daycare and boarding service that helps fund the farm’s nonprofit work. With a large backyard, group play, and attentive care, dogs enjoy a safe and social environment. Every stay supports sustainable farming, animal rescue, and community education. Even here, sustainability is central, dog waste is composted, and treats are made from natural ingredients.
